How to remove mould from blinds

How to remove mould from blinds

Find all our tips on how you can remove mould from your blinds and prevent it from returning!

Why mould grows on blinds

Mould is an unfortunate occurrence on indoor blinds, however there are many ways to prevent it growing in the first place, or to clean it as soon as you notice it.

Mould grows on blinds mostly due to their close proximity to windows. When there's a temperature difference between the inside of the home and the outside glass, water droplets (condensation) builds up, which wets your blinds.

If your blinds aren't dried off, this moist environment creates the perfect home for mould to thrive.

Mould occurs frequently in rooms like your bathroom or laundry due to the humidity from showers or dryers, but can also appear anywhere throughout your home.

How to remove mould from blinds

To start the mould removal process, begin by vacuuming over your slats or fabric. You can also use a brush, but ensure the bristles are not too hard so they won't damage the material.

Once the excess mould is removed, you can then go in with a cleaning solution. In most cases, household cleaning products work well and you won't require harsh chemicals.

The most common cleaning option is using vinegar as this kills the mould and helps it to stop coming back.

Wipe the vinegar over the blinds using a cloth, but be careful not to soak the fabric, you want it to be damp, not dripping wet.

Alternative mould removal options

If you'd rather use something else other than vinegar, there are options for you.

The first is a mixture of warm water and soap, and the other is water and lemon juice.

Both options should cut through the mould and keep your blinds looking fresh.

Preventing mould from growing on blinds during winter

Winter is one of the most common times to see mould occur due to the warmth inside your home and the cold glass from outside, which creates condensation.

The best way to prevent mould on your blinds during winter is to open blinds and curtains, or on days where it's a bit warmer, open your windows up a fraction.

Aluminium Venetian blinds

Aluminium Venetian blinds are one of the best options for mould prevention due to their durability. Aluminium is water resistant and just rolls off the blinds, whereas fabric can absorb it.

An added bonus of Venetian blinds in your bathroom or laundry is that they are a great blind for providing plenty of privacy without compromising on natural light.

Timber look Venetian blinds are made from a synthetic plastic-type material, making them another great blind for preventing mould.

Timber-look is designed to recreate the natural and earthy feel of real timber blinds, however they are a much more durable option as timber is delicate and the grains can swell when exposed to water.
